2023 Artists in Conversation Festival

She Loves You Back & American Patriots

location

Historic Alberta House
5131 NE 23rd Ave, Portland, OR

She Loves You Back is a collection of staged art songs exploring the role of Earth as mother — a feminine body that is exalted and exploited. The piece argues: what befalls a feminine body befalls the planet. She Loves You Back weaves contemporary and classical art songs into a narrative work. The program includes Ashi Day’s For Whom the Dog Tolls, Shruthi Rajasekar’s The Letter, Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben, and two works by local composer Lisa Neher: excerpts from No One Saves the Earth from Us But Us and Sonnet at the Edge of the Reef. Created by Director Joellen Sweeney, performer Claire Robertson-Preis, and pianist Jesse Preis, She Loves You Back is presented as part of the Artists in Conversation Festival at 3:00 pm on Saturday November 18 and 7:00 pm Sunday November 19.

Dates

November 18th: 3pm — She Loves You Back, 7pm — American Patriots
November 19th: 3pm — American Patriots, 7pm — She Loves You Back

American Patriots is a new opera-theater production that explores what it means to be American from four different perspectives: Black American, Indigenous American, New American, and white Working-Class American. Working with interviews of Americans today, composers Regina Harris Baiocchi, Danielle Jagelski, Marc LeMay, and Yaniv Segal create a dynamic auditory experience that combines classical, jazz, musical theater, and unique styles in unexpected ways. These episodic interviews are transformed into a gripping and impactful musical narrative that reflect America’s polyphonic identity, performed by 3 vocalists and 8-piece ensemble. American Patriots takes an unflinching look at American identity and unconscious bias, fostering connection across experiences. American Patriots, created by Samantha Rose Williams, is presented as part of the Artists in Conversation Festival at 7:00 pm on Saturday November 18 and 3:00 pm on Sunday November 19.
